Shock In South Korea As President Yoon Is Impeached After Martial Law Controversy | 10 News First

South Korea's Constitutional Court formally removed President Yoon Suk Yeol from office on Friday in a landmark ruling that has sharply divided the nation.

The court upheld the National Assembly’s impeachment motion, citing Yoon’s brief but controversial declaration of martial law last year, a move that triggered the country’s most severe political crisis in decades.

The decision prompted mixed reactions across the country.

Anti-Yoon demonstrators erupted in celebration, with some embracing and weeping with joy, while supporters of the president appeared sombre, with at least one person seen in tears.

In accordance with South Korean law, a presidential election must now be held within 60 days to determine Yoon’s successor.
