The Baltimore County Fire Department paid its last respects to one of its own Wednesday. Lt. Raymond Vargas Jr., who served out of the Baltimore County Fire Station 55 in Perry Hall, died last month in the line of duty after a battle with cancer. He died just three weeks after learning he had leukemia. Vargas was known as a mentor, leader and friend who served Baltimore County since 2013. Vargas dreamed of becoming a firefighter as he grew up in the Bronx, New York. He joined the Baltimore County Fire Department as an EMT and firefighter. Vargas' passing is recognized as a line of duty death under a law that acknowledges the increased risk of cancer among firefighters due to exposure to toxins.
