Jury selection starts in Morin case partially under secrecy

Jury selection started Tuesday in the trial of a man charged with murder in the killing of Rachel Morin. Tuesday marked the first day of the trial against Victor Martinez-Hernandez, who was arrested in June 2024 after a nationwide manhunt on first-degree murder and rape charges connected to Morin's killing. Despite repeatedly noting intense public interest in this case, the judge barred the media and the public from attending the first of three days of jury selection. The constitution mandates open trials, and voir dire is an important part of the process, during which more is learned about possible witnesses and evidence, and sources of possible bias for which the court might have concerns.
