Russian President Vladimir Putin said that competition in the Arctic between various nations is growing, as US President Donald Trump seeks to annex Greenland and NATO increases its activities in the region.
Moscow will respond to new challenges by increasing its military presence in the region, Putin said Thursday during a televised speech at the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk. He said there’s nothing unusual in Trump’s desire to get full control of Greenland by taking it from Denmark.
“We are talking about serious plans on the American side regarding Greenland,” that “have long-standing historical roots,” Putin said. “We are only concerned about the fact that NATO countries as a whole are increasingly designating the far north as a springboard for potential conflicts, practicing the use of troops in these conditions.”
Putin said that he ordered the government to extend a renovation programme for military towns in the Arctic to build and improve the living conditions of soldiers and officers. According to Putin, Russia will spend about $600 million on the programme by 2030 as the number of troops increases.
