Myanmar earthquake devastation revealed as rescue teams search for survivors

Aerial footage shows the scale of devastation in Myanmar’s quake-hit Mandalay.

Many are believed to be buried beneath the rubble of the Sky Villa complex after Friday’s massive earthquake in Southeast Asia.

The 7.7-magnitude quake has claimed at least 1,700 lives, and left thousands more injured or missing.

Civil war in Myanmar, where a military junta seized power in a coup in 2021, has complicated rescue efforts.

The military government has declared a week-long mourning period from Monday.

Chinese Search and Rescue Teams have been working around the clock looking for survivors amongst the rubble.

Mandalay residents have been forced to camp on the side of the road due to a high number of aftershocks.

The United Nations said it was rushing relief supplies to survivors in central Myanmar.

And the United States pledged $2m in aid “through Myanmar-based humanitarian assistance organisations”.
