GOP seeks cuts over tax hikes for 2026 state budget

The Maryland General Assembly is in a sprint to the finish line on the state budget. While the governor and Democratic legislative leaders in both chambers have agreed to a broad budget framework, the final product is not nearly finished. Gov. Wes Moore has repeated his intent to base his budget proposal on three principles: reform the tax code, grow and diversify the state's economy and invest in people. Senate Republicans tried to make their case for cuts — not tax increases — and appealing to the state's needs over its wants.
