Alex was a healthy kid until he got 12. In May 2021 he survived an autoimmune disease (acute disseminated encephalomyelitis). The autoimmune process started with just double vision and then caused coma and inflammation of brain stem and a part of cerebellum. The process was stopped by several courses of hormones and IVIG treatment but it left lesions on brain stem pons and cerebellum. Brain stem pons is a part of a brain that transfers signals from brain to spinal cord and muscles that is why Alex became totally paralyzed after the disease but he is fully aware and his cognitive function is the same as it was before. He didn’t give up and tries to get back the control over his body. He is trying different types of treatments and rehabilitation (physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc.). We want to share his story to encourage other people not to give up even in such horrible situations and want to share our knowledge and experience we got in different neurological rehabilitation centers.
