In the first year of Kyōhō, former Kishū domain lord Tokugawa Yoshimune ascended to the position of eighth shogun after a fierce succession dispute with the Owari family. However, the feud remained unresolved, and there were rumors of a plot to assassinate Yoshimune within Edo Castle.
Out of caution, Yoshimune secretly calls for Ude Shōjō as his food taster. This man was the son of Shogun Yoshimune, who now stands at the pinnacle of the nation, born to Shino (Yachigusa), a woman who played the role of a poisoner when he lived in a room in the Kishu domain. But when Shōjō was seven years old, Shino was abandoned by Yoshimune and drank poison and died. Shino had also made young Shōjō drink poison but changed her mind and made him vomit it out. One day in front of Shōjō who has such a dark past, a surprising anonymous letter arrives saying that Shino is still alive...
