Union representatives, state lawmakers push for federal worker bills

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the American Federation of Government Employees held a news conference in Annapolis Monday evening to push for pieces of legislation.

"We're at a time where civil servants, at the federal level, are being attacked for simply doing their jobs," said Patrick Moran, AFSCME Maryland Council 3 president. "At a time when we are facing a tough budget climate, we are grateful to have so many allies in Annapolis with us here today."

Union leaders said they want to protect already-negotiated compensation in union contracts covering state employees.

Governor Wes Moore delivered remarks at the news conference, standing alongside AFSCME.

"We make sure that we take care of our people, and right now, our people are under attack," Moore said. "We're watching how our workers are under attack, people who are willing to raise their hands, willing to raise their hands because society asked them to. People who are willing to take on jobs that might pay less, that might have longer hours because our society asked them to."
