Mysterious spirals light up night skies after SpaceX rocket launch

Mysterious spirals thought to be frozen fuel from a SpaceX rocket have been spotted in the sky above Britain.

The phenomenon was seen by countless people across the UK at around 8pm on Monday evening.

BBC lead weather presenter Simon King explained the display had been caused by frozen fuel expelled by a recent SpaceX launch.

He said: “Watchers have captured the SpaceX spiral in the skies above the UK this evening after a rocket launch in the US.

“[It was] caused by illuminated frozen fuel expelled from the rocket second stage.”

SpaceX launched its third mission of the year for the United States’ spy satellite agency.

A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from a pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 1348 EDT (1748 GMT).

The mission, named NROL-69, was for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Details about NROL-69’s payload remain secret.

SpaceX ended its webcast nine minutes after launch at the NRO’s request, after the Falcon 9’s first stage landed back at Cape Canaveral.
