New research from Johns Hopkins University published Monday finds many of America's major bridges have a high risk of ship collisions, including Maryland's Chesapeake Bay Bridge. National guidelines established by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) indicate the probability of a ship colliding with a bridge should only happen once every 10,000 years. But the Hopkins research finds the Bay Bridge could face that risk much sooner, revealing the Bay Bridge has one of the highest risks nationwide.
