Over the past 20 to 30 years, there has been a decrease in cancer related deaths; however, women now surpass men in cancer deaths for the first time ever. Mercy Medical Center oncologist Dr. Anokhi Patel said this is partially due to better screenings. Another factor is that many Americans no longer smoke, so there's a decline in lung cancer. Patel said young women need to know their genetic risk, something that can determine when they should start getting screened.
