The Greek Super League (Super League Greece, or SLG) is the top professional football division in Greece, featuring 14 clubs competing for the national title. Founded in 1927, the league has been dominated historically by the "Big Three" clubs—Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, and AEK Athens—although PAOK Salonika has also emerged as a strong contender in recent years. Olympiacos, based in Piraeus, is the most successful club in the league’s history, with numerous domestic championships. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Football League, and the champion typically qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, while other top teams gain entry to European competitions like the Europa League.
The competition itself has seen fluctuating levels of domestic and international success, with Greek teams often facing challenges in European tournaments. Despite the dominance of the traditional powerhouses, clubs like Aris Thessaloniki and Asteras Tripolis have occasionally threatened the established order. The Super League is known for its passionate fanbases and intense rivalries, with the "derby of the eternal enemies" between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos being one of the most heated fixtures in Greek football. While the league has made strides in improving its infrastructure and financial stability, it still faces challenges such as match-fixing allegations, financial issues at some clubs, and a lack of consistency in international competition.
