The country’s current president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, confirmed that Duterte was flown to the Netherlands on Tuesday night, and reports from Dubai said that the chartered plane had stopped there en route for refuelling.
Duterte, 79, was detained at Manila airport on a warrant issued by the ICC, marking the climax of a 13-year investigation into a man who, as a city mayor and later president, boasted of having personally killed drug suspects, and encouraged his police force to do the same.
The extradition happened despite efforts to block it in the courts by Duterte’s lawyers and his daughter, Sara, the vice-president of the Philippines.
