LIVE: President Duterte seen boarding jet in Manila after arrest

Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, faces prosecution over the deaths of thousands of people killed during his “war on drugs”, after being arrested on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Duterte, 79, was arrested at Manila airport, after a visit to Hong Kong where he had predicted his arrest and said that he accepted his fate. It marks the climax of a 13-year investigation into a man who, as a city mayor and later president, openly boasted of having personally killed drug suspects, and encouraged his police force to do the same.

“What is the law and what is the crime that I committed?” he said in a video, apparently taken during a conversation with the officers arresting him, and supplied to a Philippines television station by his daughter, Veronica.

He added, “I was brought here not of my own volition, it is somebody else’s. You have to answer now for the deprivation of liberty.”
