Sanosuke Shoji (Tatsuya Nakadai) has spent most of his life as a dependent in the Shoji household, where his elder brother inherited the family estate—a role that has marked him as a burden. The only person who cares for him is his niece, Miya (Nanami Sakuraba), the daughter of the current head of the family. One day, Miya confides in her great-uncle about a marriage proposal, revealing her wish to marry the man she loves, though her parents are pushing for a suitor from a high-ranking family. When she ultimately rejects the arranged match, the jilted suitor challenges her beloved to a duel in anger. Hearing this, Sanosuke takes up his sword to protect Miya from this crisis.
