Murder in a Small Town Season 1 Finale Recap & Season 2 Hints
The Season 1 finale of *Murder in a Small Town* delivered a shocking twist as the town’s unassuming art teacher, Tommy Cummins (played by Noah Reid), was revealed to be a serial killer. Cummins’ dark side shocked viewers as he used his victims to create eerie renaissance-style portraits. Executive producer Jeff Wachtel explained the casting decision, saying Reid’s reputation as a wholesome actor made him the perfect, unexpected villain.
The finale also deepened the backstory of lead character Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), tying his past to the series’ artistic themes. Fans got a glimpse of Karl’s troubled childhood, his connection to his artist mother, and how this shaped his investigative “superpower” of viewing the world compositionally.
Looking ahead to Season 2 (pending renewal), Wachtel teased that the new season will explore Karl’s family history further, along with Cassandra’s (Kristin Kreuk) backstory and ambitions. There’s also a promise of fresh conflicts, including Cassandra’s potential political win as councilwoman, which could put her at odds with Karl.
While the next season will avoid another serial killer plot, it will feature a season-long mystery involving multiple murders, connecting past unsolved cases. Expect deeper character arcs, surprising twists, and more drama in the small town setting.
