A tribute to one of the greatest midfielders of the game, Croatia’s Luka Modrić 🇭🇷. Like his country’s beginnings, Luka’s own youth was plagued with tragedy: his childhood coincided with Croatia’s War for Independence, and at 6 years old he lost his beloved grandfather and his home to violent militia, becoming a child refugee. Shaped by this hardship, Luka learned to never give up, despite his small size and how much others underestimated him.
Today, he’s helped his country earn two World Cup medals (Silver in 2018 🥈 Bronze in 2022 🥉) and his team Real Madrid reach historic wins in Europe (including 5 European Champions League trophies 🏆). In 2018, he was crowned the best player in the world by winning the Ballon d’Or 👑.
Despite all these accomplishments, he remains unbelievably humble, compassionate, and selfless, never acting like the star that he is. Or as @motleyistheonlywear on Tumblr stated so well (after Modric comforted Brazil's Rodrygo after Croatia knocked them out of the World Cup):
"Luka Modric, a veteran, a mentor, and a legend in the game, waited patiently in his moment of victory so that he could comfort a devastated young player and club teammate.... He didn’t gloat or avoid the situation, he went out of his way to both celebrate with his team and to show compassion for the hurting side.... That level of love and compassion and respect coming from one of the most talented players in the game is what it is all about in my opinion."

It’s this attitude from him that enamored me with this quiet, passionate Croat, that made me feel happy in a period (this past Dec/Jan) where I was down so hard mentally and physically. He made me proud of my ethnic heritage, proud that I can say, "I am Hrvatski!” Many video tributes showcase his skill, but this video I made to celebrate him as a person, as the face of his country. In particular, I wanted to use a Croatian song as well. Srce mi gori! 🇭🇷
