In the chilling tale of "The Evil Dead," five Michigan State University students embark on a weekend getaway to an isolated cabin nestled in the hills. There, they stumble upon the Book of the Dead, also known as the Morturom Demonto, a Babylonian and Sumerian text with demonic incantations.

Curiosity gets the better of them, and they play a tape recording found in the cabin, unwittingly awakening vengeful demons. The tape's message warns of the dangers of possession and advises dismemberment of the possessed to stop them.

The horror begins when Cheryl is attacked and violated by the demonic force, setting off a chain of possession among the group. Despite her harrowing experience, no one believes Cheryl's account of the events.

Her brother Ash decides to take her to town for safety, only to find the bridge destroyed, trapping them in the woods. Cheryl succumbs to possession and injures Linda, leading to her confinement in the cellar. Shelly also falls victim to possession, prompting Scotty to kill her in self-defense.

As chaos ensues, Scotty ventures out to find a way out of the woods but meets a grisly fate at the hands of the possessed trees. Meanwhile, Linda and Cheryl continue their onslaught, forcing Ash to take drastic measures to survive.

Desperate to stop the demonic forces, Ash battles Linda and ultimately beheads her, but not before she taunts him one last time. Returning to the cabin, Ash faces off against Cheryl and Scotty, both possessed and relentless in their pursuit.

In a final act of desperation, Ash discovers the Book of the Dead and incinerates it in the fireplace, causing the demons to disintegrate with the dawn. However, just as he thinks he's safe, the evil force descends upon him, leaving his fate uncertain as the screen fades to black.
