Battle of Oleg Sentsov platoon (47th Brigade) near Avdiivka in October 2023.

Oleg Sentsov (call sign "Groont") is a Ukrainian film director, writer and political activist from Crimea.
Following the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, he was abducted, illegally taken to Russia and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment on fabricated charges. In 2019 released in a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.

Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Oleg Sentsov joined the newly formed 47th Assault Brigade. His call sign "Groont" means _Terra firma_ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleh_Sentsov

For the purpose of this translation I formatted soldiers' call signs in *double* quotation marks: "Groont", "Red", "Wimpy", "German", "Jew", etc. Regular names (Dima, Max, Mishka) remain as is.

The code names of the field positions are set in *single* quotation marks: 'Mamai', 'Ottoman', 'Philosopher', 'Rex'.

'Rex' is a vast trench system defended by the guys in the video. 'Mamai' is a position on a dominant height that was supposed to be taken by another unit.

FYI *Deployment and Positioning:*

Oleg Sentsov's ("Groont") platoon is holding on the left flank of 'Rex', controlling about 40% of the trenches.

– "Jew" and "German" are on the leftmost flank of the Ukrainian-controlled part of the trenches.
– "Groont" and "Wimpy" are in the middle.
– "Red", "Swede" and "Joker" are on the right flank, closer to the middle of 'Rex' overrun by the Russians.
– The two squad commanders "Alkaida" (Dima) and Max function as runners and move all over the place.

*Notes:*

(2:41) AGS -- Automatic belt-fed grenade launcher AGS-17.

(15:22) "Red" -- female tactical med's call sign is "Риж" (Ryzh) -- an abbreviation of _Redhead._ I rendered it as "Red", but it could easily be translated as Ginger, Rusty, Copper-top or Carrot. (FYI, this is an assault unit, so "Red" is not just a Tacmed, but a full-fledged assault rifleman.)

(2:58) (4:47) "German and Jew" -- I kid you not, those two are called Німець і Єврей, "German" and "Jew". ("German" is nicknamed so because he's on the MG 3 machine gun.)

By the same logic the bushy bearded sergeant is called "Alkaida" [sic] His real name is Dima.
