This book features characters that are racist, antisemitic, and homophobic.I have chosen to omit one sentence that features a physical description of a minor character that I found to be an offensive racial caricature. I decided not to record slurs in any instance and have included a censorship noise where they originally occurred in the text.
I have left unaltered antisemitic comments and allusions that I believe are important to understanding the horrifically casual antisemitism that was prevalent in Europe and America before WW2, and in many places continues today. The offensive sections in this text demonstrate the importance of our vigilance in preventing the spread of bigotry and xenophobia.
Despite these troubling passages, I decided to read this text because it is unique for its time and historically important. It features men struggling from PTSD after WW1, although at the time of writing, there was no term for this condition. It also explores what we might now call toxic masculinity, specifically in the face of liberated female sexuality - the latter being a subject that is absent from most other popular literary works of the time and is therefore worthy of exploring and studying.
