Elderly Manuel’s world falls apart when Rosa, his wife of decades, suddenly commits suicide. The shock and grief are so consuming that it triggers an onset of dementia. Unable to live with checking him into an institution, his son, Mario, takes him home to live with his young family. This despite Manuel’s newfound inclinations towards sudden outbursts of violence and inexplicable behaviour that puts everyone in danger. Unbeknownst to the family, already struggling to cope with this disturbing new living situation, Manuel has also taken to cutting himself. Among… other things. An unspeakable series of paranormal happenings begin to unfold.

The sophomore feature of Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, following their circuit hit THE PASSENGER, THE ELDERLY takes the acclaimed Spanish duo to vivid new heights. Exploring the indignities of old age as a grounded starting point, the film gradually snaps off one guardrail after another, building to a crescendo of sheer horror with imagery that can never be unseen. Cerezo and Gómez direct with controlled, creeping camera movements and an inspired use of darkness and light. Zorion Eguileor, so impressive in THE PLATFORM, shines as Manuel, playing the star-crossed widower with fearsome commitment. Coming after last year’s phenomenal ALL THE MOONS, in which Eguileor also appeared, THE ELDERLY continues Filmax’s return to top tier genre works that stand completely alone. Le monde de Manuel s’effondre lorsque son épouse Rosa se suicide soudainement. Le choc est si grand qu’il provoque la démence chez le vieil homme. Incapable d’envoyer son père vivre dans une résidence spécialisée, son fils Mario l’accueille dans sa propre maison avec sa jeune famille. Et ce, malgré que Manuel ait désormais des comportements agressifs, inexplicables… dangereux. De plus, sans que ses proches le sachent, Manuel a commencé à se mutiler. Entre autres. Les autres aînés du voisinage se sont également mis à agir bizarrement. Une série d’événements paranormaux semble avoir été déclenchée.

Deuxième long métrage de Raúl Cerezo et Fernando González Gómez après THE PASSENGER, un succès sur le circuit des festivals, THE ELDERLY permet au duo espagnol d'atteindre un nouveau sommet. Le film explore d’abord le vieillissement, le deuil et la perte de dignité, puis prend un virage inusité, entamant un crescendo d’horreur pure, avec des images qui vous hanteront à jamais. La réalisation de Cerezo et Gómez est précise et efficace, avec des mouvements d’appareil intrusifs et un usage inspiré des zones d’ombre et de lumière. Déjà si impressionnant dans THE PLATFORM, Zorion Eguileor est fantastique dans le rôle de Manuel, incarnant le veuf avec une redoutable conviction. Après le phénoménal ALL THE MOONS l’an dernier (où jouait aussi Eguileor), THE ELDERLY poursuit le retour de Filmax dans l’élite du cinéma de genre.
