An Interview with Canadian Communist & Trade Unionist Jack Phillips

Jack Phillips was one of the outstanding leaders of the Communist Party and the labour movement for many years. He joined the Young Communist League in 1933 and was active in many important working class struggles during the Depression. After serving in the armed forces during WWII, he quickly became a key figure in organizing the Vancouver Civic Employee;s Union (Outside Workers), which was expelled from the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada in 1951 because of its Communist leadership. It took some 15 years of struggle for the union to regain affiliation to the labour movement as CUPE Local 1004.

Jack was in the Communist Party leadership both in BC and on the Central Committee, and served as the CPC representative on the World Marxist Review monthly in Prague. During his later years, his main political work was in the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC (COSCO), including several years as president.

Steeped in socialist theory and knowledge, Jack was always able to give thoughtful counsel and advice to the Party and the people's movements. During the difficult period of the CPC's internal split in the early 1990s, he was the editor of the Western Bulletin, the only regular Communist publication in Canada until the launch of People's Voice in 1993. He remained a regular contributor of articles to People's Voice until health issues made this too difficult.

Jack Passed away on Jan 30, 2005 after a brief period in the hospital, and is remembered fondly by friends and comrades to this day.
