Abstract: We give an overview of the cobordism classification of SPT phases, which extends the group cohomology classification. We follow the approach of Anton Kapustin, and work entirely in the continuum. At the end we relate the beyond cohomology phases to certain obstructions to carrying out the Else-Nayak truncation procedure on the lattice, and make contact with quantum cellular automata (QCA).
