The song was released on January 8, 1990, by A&M Records as the third single (fourth in the United Kingdom) from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). "Escapade" became the third of the historic seven top-five singles released from the Rhythm Nation 1814 album, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.
