Whenever you play a single player game, you're rarely ever actually alone. There will be enemies you fight against, or allies that you fight along side.
These characters are NPC's, non playable characters, and they're controlled by the game's AI.

and without these characters there is no game.

And it's something that modern players take for granted, something that is expected of any single player experience. But it's not always been as complex and high tech as it is in modern games.

Games like Pacman, Halo CE, F.E.A.R, and half life pioneered the industry's AI technology decades ago...
