Activists condemn YouTuber who brought clean drinking water to Kenya

Social Media star Jimmy Donaldson known as ‘Mr Beast’ on YouTube has come under fire from activists for his philanthropic work.

Mr Donaldson is funding projects in Africa, building 100 wells that will bring clean drinking water to 500,000 people.

Activists, however, seem to disagree with the young man's goodwill, saying his actions shamed the Kenyan government and helped “perpetuate” the stereotype that Africa is “dependent on handouts”.

Sky News Contributor Kosha Gada said the activists “need to get out of the way”.

“The other thing about the white male coming in and saving the oppressed, that whole thing, they need to just get out of the way because what he is, is a beneficiary of a unique time and an unprecedented time in history because of the internet,” Ms Gada told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“He is the second most subscribed platform, over 200 million people on YouTube, that is a resource and a power that he has to bring attention to the issue. Doesn’t matter what the colour of his skin is.”
